Can galvanised steel be recycled?
Yes. Galvanised steel products are fully recyclable, and Scrappy’s buys and recycles them every day. Modern steel is made from iron ore mixed with other substances to produce an alloy. Steel is 100% recyclable and can be recycled an infinite number of times, saving energy and raw materials each time it is reprocessed. Most steel already contains around 20% recycled content.
How is steel galvanised?
Steel is hot-dipped in a zinc coating solution to become galvanised. This coating protects the steel from corrosion, scratches, and general surface wear.
Galvanised steel is ideal for marine and harsh environments because it resists both salt and extreme weather conditions. It is suitable for construction applications of up to 200°C. The extent of galvanisation is measured by the ‘weight per surface area’ of the zinc coating. In terms of workability, galvanised steel can be punched, sheared, pressed, welded, drawn, and bent to meet project requirements.
